Journey No. 13: SUNRISE CITY – SOUTH – AFFIRMING CAPABILITIES ON SOFT SOIL, CREATING A SOLID BASE FOR THE SOUTHERN GATEWAY MEGA COMPLEX 
Located right at the southern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, Sunrise City was one of the most prestigious, large-scale residential and commercial complexes of its time. To address the challenge of massive structural loads on South Saigon’s characteristic deep layer of soft alluvial clay, Bachy Soletanche Vietnam executed a comprehensive deep foundation solution – from deep load testing to circumferential diaphragm walls and hundreds of high-capacity barrette piles – affirming our technical prowess in overcoming complex geological conditions.
Project Description:
Project: Sunrise City – South (Plot V, Nguyen Huu Tho Street, Tan Hung Ward, HCMC)
Scale: 6 blocks (31–34 stories) + 2 basements + 5-story podium
Construction period: December 2008 – September 2009
Scope of Works:- Test Piles: 3 barrette piles (up to 70.4m deep), with static load test capacity nearing 2,900 tonnes.
- Diaphragm Wall System: 18,358 m² (0.8m thick, 24m to 54m deep), encompassing a site perimeter of 557m.
- Mass Barrette Piles: 275 barrette piles (53m – 72m deep), including 164 shaft-grouted barrette piles and 111 plain barrette piles.
Technical Highlights:- Conquering Soft Ground Conditions: Successfully testing static loads near 2,900 tonnes at depths over 70m proved the precise engineering calculations of Bachy Soletanche Vietnam for the 34-story tower cluster.
- Large-Scale Shaft Grouting Application: 164 out of 275 working piles incorporated shaft grouting technology, optimizing skin friction and significantly maximizing the load-bearing capacity.
- A Robust 557m Diaphragm Wall: The 24m to 54m deep diaphragm wall provided total safety and stability for the excavation of 2 basements in a high groundwater table environment.
Significance & Legacy:Whenever admiring the majestic Sunrise City – South complex guarding the southern entrance of the city, few realize that buried deep beneath is an underground foundation grid of 275 Barrette piles and over 550m of diaphragm wall engineered by Bachy Soletanche Vietnam. More than just a project completed right on schedule, it serves as a testament to our engineering capability in overcoming severe soil constraints to shape Saigon’s modern urban landscape.
